At the Adventist Medical Group, we have a well-established pediatric endocrinology practice, with a history of caring for children with a wide variety of endocrine disorders.
In many respect, hormones are the ‘engine’ of life, regulating things like your metabolism, growth, development, tissue function, and even your mood. Your endocrine system is a system of glands throughout the body that secrete hormones to regulate your body. In some ways, the endocrine system is very similar to your nervous system in that it is an information signal system. However, compared to the nervous system, your endocrine system has a slower response time and the results last longer as your hormones have a much longer life than the electrical impulses of your nervous system. The study of the endocrine system and the abnormalities that can occur is known as endocrinology.
Pediatric endocrinology is a branch of endocrinology that deals specifically with the endocrine glands and how they affect the physical growth and sexual development of children. Most pediatric endocrinologists work with individuals who have endocrine problems from infancy through adolescence. At least half of these cases are individuals with Type 1 diabetes. Other conditions can include growth disorders, intersex disorders, and various adrenal, thyroid, and pituitary conditions.
Some common pediatric endocrine disorders are:
Congenital adrenal hyperplasia
Growth hormone deficiency
